Optimizing Your Fingerprint Reader

Optimizing Your Fingerprint Reader

To get the most from your fingerprint reader, follow these three easy tips.

Tip #1: Position Your Finger Correctly

Place the pad of your finger flat on the sensor. Consistency is key, so make sure you use the same finger orientation each time. Avoid pressing too hard, because that distorts your fingerprint and can affect accuracy.

Tip #2: Prevent Dry Skin From Affecting Your Scan

Fingerprint readers rely on the skin’s natural oils. If your skin is dry, run your finger along the backside of your ear to redeposit those natural oils. You can also regularly moisturize with oil-free lotion, but give your hands plenty of time to dry before using the reader.

Tip #3: Don’t Clean the Device With Any Kind of Liquid

To clean your fingerprint reader, avoid using liquids or chemicals, because they can damage the sensor. Instead, press a piece of office tape to the surface and lift; the tape traps oils and clears the surface. A soft, dry cloth works as well. Do this about once a week.
